Selecting an Outdoor Playset

Lots of people have great memories of spending their childhood using outdoor swing sets.  You can find them in many different places – yards, parks, and even restaurants.  Playsets usually include swings and slides, but can also have monkey bars, bridges, and other toys for kids to enjoy.  Getting an outdoor playset for your yard can be a way to offer your kids a lot of fun and enjoyment.  However, there are lots of options out there, so selecting an outdoor playset can be a little tricky.

The first thing to do when looking at outdoor play sets is to do your research. Know your basic materials – wood, steel, and plastic – and their benefits and downsides. Important factors for each include the ease of use and installation, and durability.  Also, ask salespeople how difficult it will be to assemble each type of playset.  Most outdoor playsets don't come preassembled, due to size.  However, it's possible to pay extra to have an expert put yours together.

If you choose to save some money and assemble your outdoor playset yourself, do be sure to get a kit that's predrilled and comes with all the hardware.  Pre-stained and finished kits are also available, taking a lot of the labor out of setting up a play set.  While it's cheaper still to work straight from plans, it can also be a lot of work.  Most people will find that a kit will be better for their situation.

Before you buy, know how much room you have.  Get measurements on all playsets, and see if they'll fit in your available space.  Remember that you need at least six feet of clear space on all sides to be really safe.  Pay attention to all safety features of your outdoor playset, too.  Remember that neighborhood kids will probably use it, too, so look for non-slip ledges, safety latches, and railings. Add-on features are great.  If a playset can get bigger and better over the years, it'll stay appealing.  Some outdoor play sets can turn into castles or pirate ships, for great games of pretend.  Look for sun coverage to minimize over heating of swings and slides.  Some play sets offer roofs or tent tops to give kids a cool place to rest.

An outdoor play set is a great choice if you'd like to give your kids the opportunity for great fun.  Just remember to learn all about them in advance, pay attention to maintenance concerns, and install them properly.  A good playset will give your kids years of fun.
